I Got 5 On It (8/21)
Welcome to “I Got 5 On It.” Each week, I’ll pick five news-worthy subjects based around college football to cover. Topics will range from views on Devy prospects, general college football talk, interesting stats, and a little bit of hip-hop music (mostly 90s rap).
Cody’s My Guys: 2023 Eligible
The CFB season kickoff is on the horizon, so it’s about that time for me to put the stamp on “My Guys” for the 2023 draft. Take a look at the freshmen players I’m planting my flag on!
(Brad) My Guys: 2023 Eligible
I’ve already staked my claim to several players in the 2021 and 2022 classes. Today, we’ll talk about the 2023 class – the incoming freshmen. Obviously, none of these guys have played a down yet, so they are all longshots to hit. Since it’s impossible to watch every incoming freshman, this list will likely grow, but here are the players that I’m on as of August 2020.

Cody’s My Guys: 2021 Eligible
The CFB season kickoff is on the horizon, so it’s about that time for me to put the stamp on “My Guys” for this upcoming draft. Some of these may be obvious, sure, but most are players I have been high on for a few seasons now. Take a look at the players I’ll be planting my flag on in 2021!
Franchise Guys: 2022 Eligible
We see people planting flags on Twitter every day. We see discussions about who was first on a player every draft season. We all have our favorite players. That’s part of the reason we play Devy. It’s easy to fall in love with a player AFTER he proves himself as one of the top talents at his position, but I like to pick My Guys early, usually as they are making the transition from high school to college. Watching as many incoming freshmen as we do for our annual Devy Watch publication gives us an incredible head start on each class and helps us find guys we are willing to pound the table for earlier than normal.
Listed below – by position – are My Guys in the 2022 draft-eligible class. This is a mix of players that highly value in Devy formats, players that I’ve targeted in CFF, or generally enjoy watching them play.

(Brad) My Guys: 2022 Eligible
I noticed I got carried away with my 2021 guys, but they’ve been in college longer so I’ve had more time to find things about them that I love. I’ll try to dial it back with the 2022 draft-eligible class. Here are My Guys in no particular order.

“Close your eyes… Picture Clyde Edwards-Helaire… Make an internal review of the discussions you’ve had in regards to him on Twitter over the past two weeks. If you feel angry when you think about him and/or you’ve engaged in numerous vitriolic debates about him and other NFL running backs, please allow me to make some unsolicited suggestions: Unplug from Twitter. Start with 72 hours. If you are still enraged when you return, take a longer break. Instead of logging on, do something that brings you joy. Go outside. Seek out legitimate face-to-face or mask-to-mask interactions. Sweat. Laugh. Breathe. Picture yourself five years from now… Will you be glad you spent time arguing on the internet about fantasy football running backs and degrading others with a contrasting viewpoint or will you wish you spent that time with your significant other or your children? You are probably a kind person; there is no reason to be mean to another human over something this trivial. It’s gonna be okay!” – Friar Franchise

Listed below – by position – are My Guys in the 2023 draft-eligible class. I don’t typically draft freshmen in Devy, so this is a mix of players that I’ve spent extended time scouting for the publication, or I’ve targeted them in Campus 2 Canton leagues. Full disclosure: I usually don’t take strong positions on lots of players that haven’t taken a snap in college. While it can be fun to be “first,” it typically doesn’t help bolster my fantasy teams, which I’m most concerned about. I’ve got a strategy that I try to stick to in both Devy and CFF, and that typically doesn’t include targeting the high profile, incoming freshmen.
“My Guys” for the 2021 Devy Class – @DW_Clayton
This is the first of three articles that chronicle a few of my favorite players for each collegiate class of Devy prospects. I’m calling these skill position players “My Guys,” as I’m essentially planting my flag on them and staking a claim that they’ll become sought after rookies in dynasty who are Top 100 picks in the NFL draft.
One Burning Question for 2020: SEC West
Greg (@devywarehouse) had the idea to tackle one burning question for each college football team in 2020. We’ll break these up by conference and/or division. Greg asked Kyle (@FranchiseKF) and Brad (@DW_BMack) to join him for the SEC West edition. The questions will either reference college fantasy football, Devy, or real-world gameday or locker room topics.
Let’s Watch Bo Nix vs Alabama
Bo Nix caught a lot of flack last year, some of it deserved, most of it not. He was a 19-year-old true freshman starting in the SEC. His first college season gave us several ups and downs, and it posed several questions he and the Auburn staff will have to answer going forward. Facing the second-toughest schedule in the nation, Nix bookended the regular season with wins over then-11th-ranked Oregon and 5th-ranked Alabama on his way to winning SEC Freshmen of the Year (over Derek Stingley, Jr).

A Gnat flew over the meadow with much buzzing for so small a creature and settled on the tip of one of the horns of a Bull. After he had rested a short time, he made ready to fly away. But before he left, he begged the Bull’s pardon for having used his horn for a resting place. “You must be very glad to have me go now,” he said. “It’s all the same to me,” replied the Bull. “I did not even know you were there.” – The Gnat & the Bull

Everybody already knows the names like Bijan Robinson and Demond Demas in the class of 2023, so no need to claim either of them as “my guys”. The bigger story would be somebody who didn’t like either. I’m going to take a bit of a deeper dive for “My Guys” in the 2023 class.

What team is the best landing spot for Brock Purdy when he does leave for the NFL? @LeviRStev
I’m going to roll with four teams. This is a combination of my perceived personnel match as well as the practicality of where teams may be targeting a QB in the 2021 or 2022 drafts.
The Truth About 5-Star Recruits and Fantasy Production: Running Back Edition
High school recruits are the shiny new toys for Devy enthusiasts. That 5-star shines bright, and for some, it can devalue some prospects who’ve produced at the collegiate level already.
When drafting a 5-star freshman running back, the expectation is to become a future top performing fantasy player. The commitment to roster these players for years shows the type of faith Devy owners have in these top-rated recruits. The question of whether or not these prospects will perform to their expectation is one that has a shocking answer.

Devy Breakout Candidates: TE
It’s been a long few months being locked in and missing our sports routine, but the college football season is finally on the horizon (we hope)! Devy drafts are underway so it is time to look at some potentially under-the-radar breakout candidates for this upcoming season. Many of these players are not household names currently and can be had later in drafts or for relatively cheap in the trade market. Last position group to hit, the TE position!

Scouting Report: Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina
This isn’t going to be a traditional scouting report. You all know who Sam Howell is. You watched him lead the ACC with 3,347 passing yards in the regular season. You watched him break UNC’s school record and set a new freshman FBS record with 38 passing TDs. Instead, I want to highlight a couple of areas where Howell is superior to most freshman QBs and pinpoint one aspect of his game that was lacking and why. Throughout the 2019 season, 18 QBs attempted more passes than Howell. Only two of them (Joe Burrow, Anthony Gordon) threw more TD passes. Only three of them (Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Chris Robinson) threw fewer interceptions than Howell’s seven.

G5: Incoming Freshman WRs
We’ve had several requests to cover more G5 prospects. This is part two of a four-part series on incoming G5 recruits. I’ll do some breakdowns on the top 20 recruits to sign at each offensive skill position. I’ll gauge how much value each prospect has for College Fantasy owners as well as Devy owners.
The below table is sorted by 247Sports Composite ranks. The CFF and Devy columns are my attempt to gauge the value of each prospect on a 1-5 scale.

Volume 2 of Devy Watch 2020 published over the weekend, and I thought it would be fun to take a by-the-numbers look and see if there were any trends to uncover. If you haven’t purchased your copy yet, you can grab it here. In addition to over 250 ranked players and profiles, vacated production, breakout age, market share, and dominator rating leaders, Volume 2 adds Projected Futures, an industry superflex mock draft, and over 180 pages of college head coach and coordinator changes and how they’ll impact the college fantasy football landscape.
Are Devy Tight Ends Helping You Lose?
Let’s face it, even with a taxi squad available, dynasty roster spots are treasured in devy leagues. The active roster during the season offers just around 35 roster spots, but when you add in devy prospects, that thins out quickly.
No prospect is a lock not to bust, but minimizing the bust potential on your team is the difference between winning and losing. There is one position that could be considered addition by subtraction for your devy roster: the tight end position.
Justyn Ross Fallout and Impact: Ngata Problem
First and foremost, it goes without saying that we absolutely feel for Justyn Ross given his recent diagnosis. For those who didn’t already hear, the rising Clemson junior wide receiver was deemed to have a congenital fusion in his neck/spine that he was born with. Surgery is scheduled for Friday, June 5th.
