Foundational Players – The Way of the Dragon
Some Takeaways:
More QBs were taken in the 1st round than in prior drafts.
More QBs came at the expense of Jaylen Waddle falling out of the 1st round.
9 Players I’m Higher on than Our Consensus
We recently updated the Devy Rankings on our site to reflect our thoughts on players entering the 2022 season. After submitting my rankings, I love to look around and see which players I valued more than our other rankers. Here are nine that I thought were notable…or at least nine that I wanted to cement my flag on.
Foundational Players – Fist of Fury
Another Foundational Players draft and some mildly interesting results compared to the previous one. What is the purpose of conducting this exercise, and why only use 3 classes?
Freshman 15: Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Arizona
My goal for this series is to cover 15 incoming freshmen that have a chance to contribute in 2022 or didn’t get enough love in the 2022 Devy Watch guide. Today, we’ll look at a WR who I ask not if but how early when thinking of where he’ll get drafted.
EJ Smith – To Be Or Not To Be?
It’s one thing to live up to the expectations of being a highly regarded recruit, but it’s another to live up to the expectations of being the son of a Hall of Fame running back. Emmitt James Smith IV, or E.J., enters the 2022 season with those expectations and more, considering Stanford went 3-9 in 2021 and needs Smith to put the team on his back.
Freshman 15: Damien Martinez, RB, Oregon State
Damien Martinez is a 3-star RB out of Lewisville, Texas. Oregon State was one of only five offers. He weighs in at a healthy 6′ and 228 pounds. He was fairly productive as a junior and senior in high school. He combined for 3,168 yards and 48 touchdowns in those two seasons. He also ran track and has an 11.37 100-meters time to his name. He enrolled early at Oregon State and has reportedly impressed everyone who has watched him.
Freshman 15: Jaydon Blue, RB, Texas
My goal for this series is to cover 15 incoming freshmen that have a chance to contribute in 2022 or didn’t get enough love in the 2022 Devy Watch guide. Today, we’ll look at a runner who falls into the latter category. I was too low on him a few months ago during the Devy Watch guide process, and now I’m trying not to overcorrect.
Freshman 15: Tobias Merriweather, WR, Notre Dame
My goal for this series is to cover 15 incoming freshmen that have a chance to contribute in 2022 or didn’t get enough love in the 2022 Devy Watch guide. Today, we’ll look at a WR who appears to have a high football IQ.
Foundational Players – Enter the Dragon
Many of you might be familiar with cornerstone rankings. If you’re not, it’s simply a ranking of 3 back to back to back draft classes (NFL Sophomores, NFL Rookies, and Next Year’s NFL Prospects). I’ve seen many individual rankings but it’s usually personal rankings. I wanted to take a different approach and see how the 3 classes stack up amongst each other when it’s 12 individuals thinking independently to make the choices they’re presented with.
Freshman 15: Kevin Coleman, WR, Jackson State
My goal for this series is to cover 15 incoming freshmen that have a chance to contribute in 2022 or didn’t get enough love in the 2022 Devy Watch guide. Today’s player became somewhat of a trendsetter when he spurned 32 Power 5 schools to join Deion Sanders and Travis Hunter at Jackson State.
Freshman 15: Drew Allar, QB, Penn State
My goal for this series is to cover 15 incoming freshmen who either have a chance to contribute in 2022 or didn’t get enough love in the 2022 Devy Watch guide. Today, we’ll look at a player who many consider QB1 in this class.
Freshman 15: Antonio Williams, WR, Clemson
My goal for this series is to cover 15 incoming freshmen that have a chance to contribute in 2022 but didn’t get enough love in the 2022 Devy Watch guide. Today, we’ll look at an All-American wide receiver. A buddy of mine in South Carolina tipped me off to Antonio Williams long before he committed to Clemson.
Freshman 15: Jordan James, RB, Oregon
My goal for this series is to cover 15 incoming freshmen that have a chance to contribute in 2022 but didn’t get enough love in the 2022 Devy Watch guide. We’ll start with an All-American running back who played his prep ball at a local school that I’m very familiar with.
RBs on the Horizon
We know that of all the positions, football is unkind to RBs the most. Teams can’t afford for them to come along slowly. The position requires you to step on the field and produce at a high level from day one because their playing days are limited. With literary each carry, an RB is getting closer to the end. There are several studies done on RB cliffs.
