Scouting Report: Jake Ferguson, TE, Wisconsin
Wisconsin isn’t particularly known for its dynamic passing game but more so for an elite rushing offense led by Jonathan Taylor. In 2018, then redshirt freshman tight end, Jake Ferguson burst onto the scene proving to be an effective offensive weapon for the Badgers. Not only did he show off his above-average athleticism, but he also proved to be an essential receiving weapon for Alex Hornibrook. With 2018 under his belt, Ferguson looks to take even another step showing he is one of the top tight ends in college football.

The past two summers I looked at the crop of incoming college receivers and attempted to project which of them had the best opportunities to “breakout” as true freshmen. I based my projections primarily on vacated production, offensive situation, and talent.

Replacing Production: RBs
Possibly the easiest way to identify the next crop of breakouts at any one position is first identifying the amount of vacated production for each team. In 2018, Eno Benjamin and Miles Sanders were clear-cut candidates for breakout seasons due to the rushing and receiving production vacated by their predecessors. In turn, Eno Benjamin has become one of the hottest names in college football while Miles Sanders became a second-round selection by the Philadelphia Eagles after only one season of starting production. Vacated production is available courtesy of the 2019 Devy Watch, so now it’s time to get to the breakout candidates.
Devy Thrift Shopping: RB Edition
As devy drafts are wrapping up and targeted prospects are getting sniped, don’t fret, the opportunity to get these players at a discount could be a season away. Whether it’s depth, injury, or a player is just learning to adapt to next level football, a player’s ADP can take a dramatic hit in one season. You may not have been able to draft the players you wanted when they were hot commodities, but in the words of Macklemore, get pumped up because it’s time to buy them at thrift shop prices.
Drafting Production
In most annual Devy drafts that are relatively depleted, there aren’t typically a lot of sure-fire choices with great college production that stand out. These drafts are often times littered with a combination of high upside incoming freshman and other college players, who are deemed to have great potential but have posted limited production.
Scouting Report: Garrett Wilson, WR, Ohio State
In the 2019 NFL Draft, two Ohio State starting receivers were drafted in the first two rounds with Johnny Dixon signing with the Houston Texans as a UDFA. Ohio State will now look to their senior WRs K.J. Hill, Austin Mack, and Binjimen Victor to step into the vacated production. Even with those three seemingly having the starting roles, there is a true freshman that has proven himself to be one of the best freshman receivers Ohio State has seen on campus in a long time. A product out of Lake Travis High School in Texas, five-star true freshman receiver Garrett Wilson is ready to prove that he is the next great receiver at Ohio State.
