Devy Watch ’21 Hits and Misses
We’re just past the halfway point of the regular season, so it’s not a bad time for some reflection. I decided to take a minute to look back at our Devy Watch ’21 rankings and see what we got right and what we got wrong.
Devy Futures 2021 Midseason
The college football season is chugging right along and boy has it been a wild ride so far. Not just in terms of rankings/playoff implications, but the Devy market has been all over the map! We have seen some underwhelming performances out of top-ranked players as well as some shooting up the ranks as relative unknowns. Needless to say, it has been fun to watch thus far in the season.
2021 Devy Stock Report – Week 7
Welcome to week six and there is a lot to discuss. Over 80 prospects graded with draft grades and full week six stats provided. Find out which players are rising and falling in the week six edition of the Devy Stock Report.
At this point in the season, we have a general idea of who these players are and how we value them. Draft capital is a great predictor of hit rate so this weekly stock report will focus on the players that will provide day one through early day three capital. Who will rise and who will fall, we continue to monitor and answer this question.

The Best Receiving Backs in College Football
I wanted to dig into college RBs and find the best returning receiving backs for 2021. Instead of lumping these backs together, or trying to rank them, I attempted to categorize them since they are a little different. Before we get into that, I wanted to mention that there are plenty of players who could have made this article, but I had to draw the line somewhere. So players like Tyler Goodson, Nay’Quan Wright, Kimani Vidal, and Bijan Robinson who did most of their receiving work on screens and dump-offs won’t be included. They are talented in their own right, but I think I found someone better in each category.

Devy Watch XXI : Toughest Cuts
One of the most challenging parts of creating this annual guide is trimming the list down to a manageable number of prospects. One of the most significant difficulties we face is watching all of the freshmen that we are assigned. We will gather as much information as possible from each team’s spring practices and make some updates to the overall ranks and add players in line for substantial work this season. In this article series, each team member will outline which players were the toughest omissions they made from 2021 Devy Watch.
Breakout Candidates- ACC
Spring games are done. Camp battles are underway. Depth Charts are beginning to shake out. The start of the college football season is on the horizon! With kickoff being only a few short weeks away, I thought it would be a great time to look at some potential breakout candidates for the 2021 season based on vacated production. Players that could see their Devy/Draft stock rise or simply be players to add to your CFF rosters. We started things with the Pac-12, time to go over some breakout candidates from the ACC!
The Most Important Games for Fringe QBs
I wanted to try to find the most important games for the fringe QBs who are 2022 draft-eligible. Even though they still have questions to answer, we’ve seen enough from Spencer Rattler and Sam Howell on big stages versus big opponents to have a good idea who they are, and 2021 gives us another year of it. Guys like Matt Corral and JT Daniels get another go versus an SEC schedule to prove their mettle. What about a guy like Desmond Ridder, though? He’s getting media/Twitter buzz, but from what I’ve seen, he’s still a project.
Buy Or Say Bye: Jadon Haselwood, WR, Oklahoma
In 2019, Jadon Haselwood was a top-ranked receiver coming out
Devy Sleeper: Xavier Hutchinson, WR, Iowa State
Xavier Hutchinson hails from his hometown in Jacksonville, Florida, where he grew up in a military family household. Both parents were in the Navy, and Hutchinson learned the value of hard work and respect at a young age. He also learned the importance of being a man of your word, which manifested during his commitment to Iowa State.
As a high school senior, Hutchinson caught 74 passes while racking up 1,004 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was also a standout basketball player in which he lettered.
B1G West: Incoming Freshmen WRs
The list of WR signees was just too large to have just one article. The eastern side of the league no doubt is the better version. According to 247Comp Ranks the top 6 receivers to sign with a Big Ten school all came from the eastern half. No surprise the Buckeyes signed the top three receivers in all of the Big Ten but Penn State grabbed themselves quite the group of receivers as well.
B1G: Incoming Freshmen RBs
As the lead evaluator for the B1G now is a perfect time to start breaking down all the incoming freshmen. 19 RBs signed with a Big Ten school, only Penn State didn’t sign a back for the 2021 recruiting cycle. A handful of these prospects were listed as ATH or FB (indicated by *) by 247Sports but they appear as RBs on team rosters.
B1G: Incoming Freshmen QBs
As the lead evaluator for the B1G now is a perfect time to start breaking down all the incoming freshmen. 11 QBs signed with a B1G school, only Maryland, Purdue, and Rutgers didn’t sign a high school QB in the 2021 recruiting class.
B1G East: Incoming Freshmen WRs

G5: Incoming Freshmen WRs
I dug into the 247Sports top 20 QBs to sign with a G5 school. Very few have Devy relevance at the moment, but we got some great late C2C sleepers to stash away.

Scouting Report: Justin Robinson, WR, Georgia
What if I told you that Georgia had another WR who was as freaky at the catch point as George Pickens…is that something you would be interested in?
Scouting Report: Nevada QB Carson Strong
Strong signed with Nevada as the 55th rated Pro-Style QB in the 2018 recruiting class. From what I can gather, Nevada was Strong’s only public offer. As a junior in High School, Strong threw for 2,732 yards and a 26:4 TD:INT ratio. Strong was under-recruited due to missing his entire senior year of high school due to an injury to his knee. Strong redshirted in 2018 after seeing action in just one game. In 2019 Strong, started 10 games as an rFR and threw for 2,335 yards and 11 TDs, and completed passes at a 63.4% clip.
Let’s Watch Bo Nix vs Alabama
Bo Nix caught a lot of flack last year, some of it deserved, most of it not. He was a 19-year-old true freshman starting in the SEC. His first college season gave us several ups and downs, and it posed several questions he and the Auburn staff will have to answer going forward. Facing the second-toughest schedule in the nation, Nix bookended the regular season with wins over then-11th-ranked Oregon and 5th-ranked Alabama on his way to winning SEC Freshmen of the Year (over Derek Stingley, Jr).
Scouting Report: Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina
This isn’t going to be a traditional scouting report. You all know who Sam Howell is. You watched him lead the ACC with 3,347 passing yards in the regular season. You watched him break UNC’s school record and set a new freshman FBS record with 38 passing TDs. Instead, I want to highlight a couple of areas where Howell is superior to most freshman QBs and pinpoint one aspect of his game that was lacking and why. Throughout the 2019 season, 18 QBs attempted more passes than Howell. Only two of them (Joe Burrow, Anthony Gordon) threw more TD passes. Only three of them (Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Chris Robinson) threw fewer interceptions than Howell’s seven.
G5: Incoming Freshman WRs
We’ve had several requests to cover more G5 prospects. This is part two of a four-part series on incoming G5 recruits. I’ll do some breakdowns on the top 20 recruits to sign at each offensive skill position. I’ll gauge how much value each prospect has for College Fantasy owners as well as Devy owners.
The below table is sorted by 247Sports Composite ranks. The CFF and Devy columns are my attempt to gauge the value of each prospect on a 1-5 scale.

Under-The-Radar Incoming Freshman Tight Ends
Today, we’ll be taking a look at some under-the-radar incoming freshman tight ends. I’m more than likely not drafting a freshman tight end in a Devy draft, unless we are talking about an extremely deep league. But these are still names worth keeping an eye on. When I’m looking at tight ends, I’m looking for a high ceiling pass-catcher. Size, frame, athletic ability, and pass-catching skills are at the top of my list. If they can block that’s nice, but I’ll worry about that after they’ve completed three years in college.
Under-The-Radar Incoming Freshman Quarterbacks
Today, we’ll be taking a look at some under-the-radar incoming freshman quarterback. Many of these guys can be found still sitting around in the very late rounds of deep Devy drafts.
Under-the-Radar Incoming Freshman Running Backs

What Will Ohio State Get From Trey Sermon?
When Sermon entered the Transfer Portal earlier this month, the Ohio State rumors started swirling immediately. In the end, they weren’t rumors at all. Between Sermon’s relationship with OSU RB coach Tony Alford and the unfortunate injury to Master Teague, the timing was perfect.
Under-The-Radar Incoming Freshman Receivers
Today we’ll be taking a look at some under the radar incoming freshman wide receivers. Many of these guys can be found still sitting around in the very late rounds of deep Devy drafts.
Devy Freshman Stock Report
With the end of the season upon us, it is time to take a look at the season as a whole and see which freshman made some huge leaps in the Devy realm. Many of these players were ranked lower, either by us or by other outlets, but looked impressive this season and took big leaps in rankings.
Fields and Lawrence Headline 2021, but Who’s Next?
Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields were first or second in any QB rankings one could find during the 2018 recruiting process. Both were highly touted 5-stars who are the best prep QBs I have ever evaluated. Their rise through the college ranks has been anticipated and projected by the @DevyWatch as both were top 3 QBs in all of college football for our annual publication before either took a college snap. I think it is a forgone conclusion that these two QBs are the premier talents in college football and likely to be the most coveted NFL prospects in the last decade at the QB position. Both should go in the top 3 picks in the 2021 NFL draft and I would say top 2 but Oregon Left Tackle Penei Sewell is in the conversation as a top pick.
So who is the next guy?
Devy QB Stock Report
As the regular season in college football winds to a halt, we’ve decided to offer a quick review of the Devy stock of each positional skill group. Today we’ll take a look at how the value of the QB’s shook out in 2019.
Devy TE Stock Report
The 2019 regular season has wrapped up, and we’ve had several movers in both directions.
Franchise Running Backs
With CFF occupying the bulk of my time this fall, I haven’t often weighed in on players and how I perceive their NFL projections. I’m going to talk about a few running backs and give some thoughts on Devy strategy.
Clydrick Edwards-Helaire- Not sure I’ve ever seen a duo on the same team improve their stock the way that Burrow and CEH did this season.
Franchise Quarterbacks
With CFF occupying the bulk of my time this fall, I haven’t often weighed in on players and how I perceive their NFL projection. I’m going to talk about a few quarterbacks and give some thoughts on Devy strategy. Stay tuned for more positional musings in the weeks to follow.
Devy WR Stock Report
Several receivers have taken over this college season so it’s time to highlight a few who have improved their stock the most. From outrageous one-handed grabs to filling up the box score, a few things can be said about this group that should have fans excited for the future at the WR position. It feels like a special era in college football with the talent level at an all-time high. Here is the end of season Devy WR stock report.
2021 Draft Class Preview
We have heard a ton about the 2020 class, and rightfully so! But not many are talking about the class of 2021 and the immense amount of talent it has, especially at the WR position. This class has really come into its own and should produce a handful of elite NFL players. Let’s take a look at how this class is looking so far (these are not my rankings):
Devy Freshman At Each Position You Must Add
The college football season is, unfortunately, At its end, and there are freshmen that have excelled to the point they are must-adds in devy leagues. Who are these freshmen you need to make priority adds? I broke them down in-depth right here.
Tyler Johnson: Buy or Say Bye
When a prospect has multiple productive seasons that include back-to-back 1,000-plus receiving yard seasons, it’s essential to look at the positive traits that make this prospect so unique. When it comes to Tyler Johnson, overthinking and over-evaluating could lead to missing out on a player that can make a substantial impact at the next level.
Travis Etienne Has Added What to His Repertoire?
During the 2019 offseason, there were articles and blurbs galore about how Travis Etienne struggles and lacks confidence catching the football. Analysts have been pumping this as a flaw in his game ever since he exploded onto the scene as a freshman, and there is little doubt that he has indeed dealt with his struggles as a receiver. Heck, he even admitted it himself last summer!
Week 10: Devy RB Stock Report
With just a few weeks left in the college football regular season, the running back values are shaping up and who you should be targeting on your Devy rosters is becoming much more clear. As rankings are being updated and prospects move up and down big boards, let’s look at the running back prospects who are on the move after Week 10, for better or for worse.
Week 8: Devy RB Stock Report
It’s hard to believe that Week 8 is no more and we are on to Week 9 of the college football season. There is enough statistical data now to identify the prospects that are deserving of Devy roster spots. Who are these running back prospects and which ones do you need to know about? Let’s take a deep dive and find out.
Steady Stock Up
Master Teague, RB, Ohio State
73 carries / 512 yards / 4 TDs / 7.0 YPC
2 catches / 45 yards
Week 7: Devy TE Stock Report
Devy values are very fluid. They can balloon and fluctuate from week to week. It’s not the best practice to (over)react to one game, but with three games in the books for most teams, it’s time take a look at the tight end position. Whose stock is up? Whose stock is down? Whose stock is holding steady?
Stock Up:
Kyle Pitts, Florida
After a monster 5-catch for 108 yards against LSU, Pitts now leads the nation in TE receptions.
