conspectus
\ kən-ˈspek-təs \
noun
1: a usually brief survey or summary (as of an extensive subject) often providing an overall view

Each week, Greg Brandt and Brad McDaniel will write a conspectus from the week of football that was. This week, the ACC showed just how bad it is. Three ranked teams lost on a weekend primed for upsets. Florida QB Feleipe Franks will miss the rest of the 2019 season after suffering an ankle injury against Kentucky.

The ACC Had a Disastrous Weekend

The weekend didn’t start out good as early as Friday night for the conference. The UNC and Wake Forest game ended in controversy when the officials failed to give the Tar Heels one final play. It only got worse after that. Boston College was demolished by Kansas at home. The Eagles lost by 24 points after being a 19 point favorite and gave up nearly 600 yards of offense. Not to mention this was Kansas’ first road win against a P5 school since 2008!

Saturday morning started badly as well. Virginia Tech nearly lost to FCS Furman while Georgia Tech did lose to FCS Citadel. North Carolina State gave up 44 points and lost to a West Virginia team that struggled offensively to start the season. The ACC’s best team Clemson did defeat Syracuse by 35 points but struggled much of the game offensively until late in the third. If the Orange had any offensive attack, this would have been a close game. The weekend was capped off by Virginia. The conference’s second-best team behind Clemson struggled mightily with the porous Florida State team. The conference appears much weaker outside of Clemson than expected in the offseason. Even the Tigers haven’t entirely performed to what was expected of them.

Upsets

We heard about it all week, when there is a college football weekend without a game between ranked opponents, things tend to get wacky. As mentioned above, Georgia Tech paid The Citadel $400k to embarrass them Saturday. Boston College put on one of the most pitiful tackling exhibits of our lifetime and got whopped by Kansas. It could have been much, much worse, but only three ranked teams lost. For the second consecutive season, Michigan State dropped a 3-point game to Arizona State. USC lost in overtime to BYU. BYU is 2-0 in overtime games in the last two weeks. Maryland’s offense came to a screeching halt. The Terrapins mustered just two scores on six trips to the red zone. They were stopped three times on fourth-and-goal to go. They also missed a 42-yard FG.

Feleipe Franks Will Miss the Remainder of the Year

Franks was tackled awkwardly by Kentucky while trying to convert a fourth down around mid-field Saturday night. Initially, it looked like an injury to one or both knees, but it was actually a dislocated ankle with a fracture. Kyle Trask led the Gators to a come-from-behind win over the Wildcats. In a quick comment, Dan Mullen said both Trask and Emory Jones will play versus Tennessee Saturday.

We believe that was the only major injury from the weekend. If you know of another, let us know on Twitter.
