conspectus
\ kən-ˈspek-təs \
noun
1: a usually brief survey or summary (as of an extensive subject) often providing an overall view
Each week, Greg Brandt and/or Brad McDaniel will write a conspectus from the week of football that was. This week, a college football staple announced his retirement, Nebraska and TCU got some bad news, and with camp beginning, the Vols are still waiting on a big waiver decision.
Bud Foster Plans to Retire After 2019
Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster, a name synonymous with Virginia Tech football, announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2019 college football season. After 33 years, he plans to go out on his own terms. Year in and year out, his defenses were near the top in several statistical categories. Whoever Justin Fuente hires to replace Foster will have big shoes to fill, something that Fuente understands after replacing Frank Beamer.
Auburn WR Needs Surgery
Speedy WR Anthony Schwartz injured his hand during a blocking drill over the weekend. The injury will require surgery. It’s still unclear how much time Schwartz will miss.
Maurice Washington’s Court Date Set
Maurice Washington’s next court date is set for September 3rd. He’s been practicing with the Huskers as if he’s going to play, but Scott Frost won’t commit to a decision until Washington’s legal issues are resolved. Nebraska opens their season August 31 so we know Washington won’t be available for game one.
Matthew Baldwin’s Waiver Denied
After Ohio State’s Spring Game, Matthew Baldwin made the decision to transfer to TCU. Continuing their inconsistency, the NCAA denied Baldwin’s waiver for immediate eligibility. TCU will appeal on his behalf. Baldwin is recovering from surgery for the second straight off-season and wouldn’t have been ready for fall camp regardless of the NCAA’s decision. Baldwin’s waiver and TCU’s appeal fall under the new transfer rules with stricter eligibility requirements. I don’t expect the NCAA to change their mind regardless of TCU’s appeal.
Waiting Patiently
With camp underway, the Tennessee Vols are still waiting on the NCAA to decide whether or not Aubrey Solomon will be eligible to play right away. Solomon, a former 5-star, played at Michigan last season. They were also waiting on a decision about Deangelo Gibbs, a 4-star safety, who transferred from Georgia. According to Jeremy Pruitt, Gibbs’ waiver was denied (as expected), and Gibbs will redshirt the 2019 season.
Coaches Poll Released
The Coaches Poll was released this past week. Clemson rightfully sits atop the poll. Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ohio State round out the top five. Here’s a link to the poll if you missed it.
