Draft season is upon us ladies and gentlemen! With the NFL Draft less than a month away, I thought it would be a good time to drop a full 7 round mock; with trades! But this year, I wanted to do it a bit differently. Instead of your basic 7 round mock where you scroll through pages of picks and find your team’s selections with relatively no commentary, I decided to break the mock-up and do an article on each individual team’s haul! Giving you a breakdown of what each team brought in and how I think it could help. So without further adieu, let’s kick things off!
With the 10th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select…
- Patrick Surtain, CB, Alabama(1st round)
- Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa(2nd round)
- Rashad Weaver, DE, Pittsburgh(3rd round)
- Josh Meyers, OL, Ohio St(3rd round)
- Ar’Darius Washington, S, TCU(4th round)
- Tommy Tremble, TE, Notre Dame(4th round)
- Cordell Volson, OT, North Dakota St(5th round)
- Shaun Beyer, TE, Iowa(6th round)
- Camryn Bynum, CB, California(6th round)
- Tyree Gillespie, S, Missouri(7th round)
The Cowboys are another team in a fortunate spot with how the board fell and 5 QBs going very early. They see some solid defensive players fall into their laps and at a time where they need it the most.
Their first pick, they land the top DB in my opinion. Surtain is a big, physical corner that does an excellent job in coverage and isn’t afraid to come down to make tackles in the run game. He is the type of corner you can throw on an island and feel comfortable that he will make the WRs life difficult. They also see Daviyon Nixon fall to them who has had some 1st round buzz through the process. Nixon is a very quick and explosive interior lineman with some deceptive strength. He can help plug up holes as well as get after the QB. They also add a physical pass rusher with good length in Rashad Weaver as well as Ar’Darius Washington who is a tad undersized but can fly around the field and is a ball hawk. Both guys fill a need a provide a ton of upside to their defense.
On offense, the Cowboys are pretty set for the most part, especially at the skill positions. But they do address some needs along the offensive line by adding Josh Myers and Corell Volson. On top of that, they grab a couple of TEs, Tommy Tremble and Shaun Beyer, that can both provide a ton in the run game but also be difference-makers in the passing game.
Overall, the Cowboys didn’t make the splash picks that they have in the past. But they do address a ton of needs and add a lot of talent to their team. Surtain, Nixon, Weaver, and Washington can all be difference makers and elevate this defense to match how dangerous the offense is.
