NFL Combine Futures

The offensive skill positions finished testing at the 2020 NFL Combine on Friday. Each year, while several players surprise, many others don’t meet expectations. Athleticism and football go hand-in-hand. The combination matters to those who make football decisions, and success catapults players up team draft boards. I searched far and wide to collect athletic numbers for future NFL Combine participants. Here are some of the top athletic numbers for running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends who are currently in college.

Devy Watch: 20/20 Vision (LJ)

One of the best things about being a part of our team is that we have seven team members to share ideas with, debate, and get a consensus ranking on players. We decided to break the player pool into specific conferences and divisions last season and we are currently in our second consecutive season with each analyst being responsible for the same group. We believe the continuity in that evaluation is helpful and is aided by the size of our team to test our evaluations and hypothesis against. This article series will provide a window into the minds and processes of each analyst and our aim is to better inform the readers about players we had strong feelings about this cycle.

Signing Day Winners and Losers: Second-year Players

Each year, teams reload their rosters with new recruits that fans get excited about for all the right reasons. As someone who likes to indulge in college fantasy football and Devy, I look at it as a new hope for the future of the NFL and can’t help but place early expectations and start evaluating these players to see who has the traits and ability to make an early impact along with eventually making the jump to the league. I would call it college’s version of rookie fever, but the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Scouting Report: WR Jalen McMillan

McMillan is a very refined receiver who makes a living off winning at the line of scrimmage. He is conditioned to utilize his hands and footwork to beat press coverage. He won’t overpower anyone with physicality at the line but he has an understanding of hand placement to shake free from defenders and keep himself clean. He always has a plan and reacts quickly to get defenders off balance within his release. Very quick feet and agility with purpose in his steps and the ability to cover the ground needed.

Fields and Lawrence Headline 2021, but Who’s Next?

Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields were first or second in any QB rankings one could find during the 2018 recruiting process. Both were highly touted 5-stars who are the best prep QBs I have ever evaluated. Their rise through the college ranks has been anticipated and projected by the @DevyWatch as both were top 3 QBs in all of college football for our annual publication before either took a college snap. I think it is a forgone conclusion that these two QBs are the premier talents in college football and likely to be the most coveted NFL prospects in the last decade at the QB position. Both should go in the top 3 picks in the 2021 NFL draft and I would say top 2 but Oregon Left Tackle Penei Sewell is in the conversation as a top pick.

So who is the next guy?

Devy WR Stock Report

Devy values are very fluid. They can balloon and fluctuate from week to week. It’s not the best practice to (over)react to one game, but with three games in the books for most teams, it’s time take a look at the wide receiver position. Whose stock is up? Whose stock is down?

Most Owned Devy Shares

I recently took a look at my all of my Devy rosters for a segment on the Devy Watch Podcast where I covered my top two most owned players. I wanted to expand upon that and give my thoughts about the rest of the players that I own a lot of stake in.

Replacing Production: RBs

Possibly the easiest way to identify the next crop of breakouts at any one position is first identifying the amount of vacated production for each team. In 2018, Eno Benjamin and Miles Sanders were clear-cut candidates for breakout seasons due to the rushing and receiving production vacated by their predecessors. In turn, Eno Benjamin has become one of the hottest names in college football while Miles Sanders became a second-round selection by the Philadelphia Eagles after only one season of starting production. Vacated production is available courtesy of the 2019 Devy Watch, so now it’s time to get to the breakout candidates.
