conspectus
\ kən-ˈspek-təs \
noun
1: a usually brief survey or summary (as of an extensive subject) often providing an overall view
Each week, Greg Brandt and/or Brad McDaniel will write a conspectus from the week of football that was. This week, we have quarterback news and major injuries at Alabama and Notre Dame, while Florida and FIU add big-time transfers.
Cole Kmet Breaks Collarbone
Junior-to-be tight end Cole Kmet broke his collarbone during practice on August 8th. A return time table of 4-10 weeks has been reported. If he makes it back at the six-week mark, he’ll take the field as the Irish take on the Georgia Bulldogs. In that scenario, he would only miss two games. Opening weekend against Louisville then Week 3 vs. New Mexico (the Irish have a week two bye). So this doesn’t totally destroy his fantasy value. Look for Brock Wright and Tommy Tremble to shoulder the load during his absence.
Brenton Cox Transfers to Florida
A former five-star recruit, Brenton Cox finds his way to the Florida Gators. Cox left Georgia last week after some off-the-field issues. He transfers to the Bulldogs’ division rival adding some extra juice to the 2020 game. Cox will most likely have to sit out the 2019 season and have three years of eligibility left. He appeared in 13 games as a true freshman in 2018. After losing several transfers his offseason, this is a welcomed addition for Gator fans.
JJ Holloman Transfers to FIU
Another former Georgia Bulldog finds his future home. After being dismissed from the team after an assault allegation was levied upon him earlier this summer. Holloman was set to be the Bulldogs’ top receiving option in 2019 before his dismissal. When Holloman sees the field in 2020, he should easily be FIU’s top option at receiver.
Washington Blocking Colson Yankoff Appeal
Washington Head Coach Chris Petersen is trying his best to derail Colson Yankoff’s immediate eligibility appeal. Yankoff left the team following spring practice and found a new home at UCLA. Even if given immediate eligibility Yankoff, would most likely be behind fellow sophomore QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the depth chart. Having Yankoff eligible in 2019 would give the Bruins a good backup option if needed.
JeShaun Jones Tears ACL
Maryland loses its top returning wideout from 2018. Due to Maryland’s low passing volume, Jones had a breakout season as a true freshman. His 22/288/5 line was good for a 29.3% dominator rating and an 18-year-old breakout age. With tearing his ACL so late in the summer, Jones will miss a lot of summer strength and conditioning for the 2020 season. Look for sophomore receiver Dontay Demus to benefit from Jones’ misfortune.
Wisconsin QB Situation
Jack Coan has dominated first-team reps thus far for Wisconsin according to @ZachHeilprin. Many expected incoming freshman Graham Mertz to have a legit shot at winning the starting gig. He finished as a top-100 player and the third-ranked Pro-Style QB in the nation according to 247Sports. When Mertz can see the field, and he plays up to his hype, he will give the Badgers there best QB in decades outside of Russell Wilson’s lone season.
Alabama Loses Freshman Running Back
Trey Sanders will be lost for the season following a foot injury last week. Sanders was the nation’s sixth-best player and top RB in his class. Most likely the Tide’s third-string back at best in 2019. This will hurt depth for the Crimson Tide, but Sanders wasn’t going to get a lot of meaningful playing time with Najee Harris, Brian Robinson, and Jerome Ford already ahead of him.
Jarren Williams named Miami QB1
Manny Diaz named rFR Jarren Williams – not Tate Martell – his starting QB Monday morning. Diaz said in a release, “We believe we can win with all three guys, however, we feel like Jarren has the greatest upside due to his passing ability, his instincts, and his determination.” Ohio State transfer Tate Martell and N’Kosi Perry are still battling for the back-up spot.
